I initially highlighted my interest in applying for the new role of vice chair at our annual conference AGM in Bournemouth 2010. Subsequently I shadowed the current committee at the post conference meeting in Edinburgh in November 2010. This was a valuable experience and confirmed my desire to attain a more active role within WCET UK, having been a member since 1997.
I then applied for the position and was nominated and seconded by my 2 colleagues Kim and Debbie.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the rest of the committee members for welcoming me into my new role as vice chair.
I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to embrace and develop this new post.
I would also like to thank those members of the Wessex group who encouraged me to apply for the post.
I have utilised the lobbying toolkit and met with my MP who was not previously aware of what Stoma Care was all about.
He appeared genuinely interested and concerned regarding the national cut backs and challenges SCN’s are facing. He subsequently tabled a question in parliament on our behalf.
During this first year of office I have also been actively involved in planning for WCETUK conference 2011.
Specifically:
I will be leading on the proposed audit as identified in my presentation. Therefore requesting for approximately 10 SCN’s, a representative from each of our industry colleagues and a member of each of the patient support groups (IA,UA and CA) to join me to formulate a questionnaire to be distributed to all SCN’s with the proposed outcome of producing a credible document demonstrating the value of Stoma Care Nurses. We have the opportunity of working with Fleishman Hillard on this exciting project with the capability of launching the report to the press and key stakeholders.
My presentation, “Our future your say” has also revisited the opportunity to re brand our national organisation Seeking your opinions on the proposal:
• Make no changes – remain WCET UK, part of the WCET international organisation, as currently.
• Inaugurate a new independent UK Stoma Nurses organisation, transferring existing membership and funds to XXXX (see suggestions for new name). Both organisations to run separately and in parallel, with members’ choosing to belong to one or both.
• Be an independent UK organisation, as above, and become a ‘partner of, or association with’ WCET international.
WCET international web site continues to be problematic with many emails being returned as the email addresses are not recognised. This is a huge concern as you may not be receiving important information and documents. Therefore, although this has been tried previously, I am attempting to formulate an accurate UK contact list. My secretary – Tara has been painstakingly updating all your contact details to hopefully rectify the problem.
The list is available at the registration desk for the duration of the conference. Please can you take a few minutes to check your personal details and make any changes?
I was honoured to represent WCETUK at the Urostomy Association 40th anniversary celebration at the Oxford Belfry Hotel on Saturday 24th September 2011.
There was a varied programme of interesting, thought provoking presentations and a thoroughly enjoyable social event in the evening. I remain in awe of the patient association members for their commitment and enthusiasm.
I am extremely motivated and enthusiastic in my new role and look forward to promoting Stoma Care both locally, nationally and internationally.
I look forward to working with you all on future projects to promote our speciality.
Finally if there is anything you think that I can help with please do not hesitate to contact me judy.hanley@wcetuk.org.uk
